I've been thinking about writing a blog post for days, maybe even weeks. The topic was clear as I have a list I created at the beginning of the year. The intention was there, but I just haven’t sat down to do it. I was procrastinating. And I told myself a whole host of believable stories to justify it.

"Networking is more important right now," I reasoned. "I simply don't have the time." Or, the most insidious of all, "Does anyone even care what I have to say?"

Sound familiar?

In the end, the real reason I was delaying this post was a messy mix of self-doubt and depleted energy. You see, I'm an introvert, and all that networking I'd been doing? It was draining my batteries faster than a phone left on full brightness.

But here I am, pushing through the noise, typing away. Why? Because I know that the stories we tell ourselves about why we're putting things off are just that – stories.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves (and Why They Matter)

If you're an aspiring entrepreneur, especially if you're feeling stuck, you're not alone. We all create narratives to explain our inaction. But those stories often mask the real issues.

If you're procrastinating on starting your business, the root cause could be:

  • Fear and Anxiety: Fear of failure, embarrassment, success, or making mistakes (perfectionism).

  • Emotional Factors: Lack of motivation, low energy, feeling overwhelmed.

  • Lack of Knowledge: Feeling like you don't know where to start or how to proceed.

These stories are common. We all experience them. The key is to recognize them for what they are and address the underlying causes.

Breaking Through the Procrastination Cycle

So, how do we move past these roadblocks? Here's a three-step approach:

1. Evaluate Your Fears:

  • What past experiences are fueling your fears?

  • How can you reframe these fears into a more positive light?

  • Instead of fearing failure, can you see it as a learning experience? Every misstep is a lesson. (I learned this firsthand with a recent Facebook ad!)

2. Explore the Root Cause:

  • What's draining your energy? Are there limiting beliefs holding you back?

  • Do you believe you lack what it takes? Where did these beliefs come from?

  • What evidence supports these beliefs? What evidence contradicts them? Challenge their validity.

3. Shift Your Perspective and Create a Sustainable Action Plan:

  • Shift your focus to what's possible. What excites you about entrepreneurship?

  • Visualize your success. How does it feel? What does it look like?

  • Create small, manageable action steps. Focus on progress, not perfection. Read this post for more on taking small steps.

  • Identify your support system. Who can offer encouragement and accountability?

  • Prioritize self-care to replenish your energy. (This is crucial!) Read this blog post on how to give yourself self-care during your entrepreneurial journey.

  • Celebrate your small wins to maintain momentum.

My Takeaway (and Yours)

Procrastination is part of being human. We all do it. Don't beat yourself up about it. Instead, practice introspection, shift your mindset, and take small, manageable steps. You'll be amazed at what you can achieve.

I'm proof of that. I almost didn't write this post. But I did. And I'm glad I did. Now, what are you going to do today?
