3 Simple Tips For Super Moms

I was sitting in bed last night and a phrase my BF said triggered a thought about the 1979 Enjoli commercial. "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never let you forget you're a man". At one point the commercial also says "I can work til 5 o'clock, come home and read tick tock" all of it implying the woman does the work, cooks, takes care of the kids, and serves her man. And the man lamely offers to cook for the kids one night as if he is doing her a favor.

And the contrast with the 1972 Helen Reddy song "I Am Woman" (lyrics: I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman). I prefer the Helen Reddy version which doesn't infer women need to be supermom. It also recognizes that it is hard (lyrics: Yes I am wise, but it's wisdom born of pain. Yes I've paid the price, but look how much I've gained). This song is empowering and still moves me to this day. 

Let's just say that I am glad we are past the 70's. But I know I was impacted by these messages and proceeded to attempt to become supermom. I made it through, but those expectations have a high cost. There is a better way!
