What Makes An Emerging Leader?
Updated: Sep 18
I love emerging leaders. I love talking to them, coaching them, leading them, and fostering their career. Basically, I love everything about them. Why, you ask?
Because these individuals are eager, present great energy and are reliable. They already have many of the qualities of a leader without being in a leadership role. And they are like sponges. They want to learn and be better.
Let me backup a bit. What is an emerging leader? An emerging leader is someone who has the skills and knowledge to become a leader in an organization, or who is interested in developing those skills. They are often high-achievers in their current roles. For my purposes, I am going to include up-and-coming leaders and people in their first leadership position who are rising in the ranks.
As a coach who focuses on emerging leaders, I leave our sessions feeling a sense of joy - like I have fulfilled my purpose. And it seems they leave our sessions feeling more empowered. You can see the energy shift within the course of one coaching session. My favorite line from an emerging leader after one session was "This was life-changing".
We have covered topics such as:
Imposter syndrome
Control issues
Delegation challenges
Hyper-achieving
Problem colleagues / staff
Frustrations with management
People-pleasing
Working with founders
Setting boundaries
And more,...
Their eagerness to address these concerns and find a better way, vs. just settling for however they present themselves currently is commendable and the workplace would be a better place if we all strove to improve in the same way.
If you are an emerging leader or mid-level manager and struggling with any of these topics, coaching may be for you. Schedule a free coaching discovery call to explore how coaching can help you find it rise within the ranks with more ease and less stress.
